Ricky has had his first serious trip to the vet's today. He suddenly got very sick, very quickly. We had noticed that he seemed to have queitened down over the last couple of days from his usual playfulness. This morning he went very quiet and did not want to move from where he had slept all night. When he did his back legs were very wobbly.
The vet is treating him for an infection which seems to be causing a lot of pain around his middle/lower back area, and a very high fever. He thinks Ricky has had a mild infection in this area for a very long time and that it has finally spread and grown much worse.
This makes a lot of sense and explains a lot. Since he came to live with us in April he has never wanted to be picked up or held at all. He loved having his head rubbed but wouldn't let us pat him down his back, he would always get up and walk away from us. Now we know he had discomfort somewhere around his back it makes sense. He is also quite skinny. Although he has always had plenty of food on offer, he never ate much in a day. Makes sense he's been "off colour" for a long time.

We now have the new "improved" version of Ricky. He's like a new cat! Happy to be picked up and held (occasionally) and enjoying being patted down his back. We thought he had energy before but now he's even more alert and playful. And his appetite is ravenous!!
